Platform comparison
Shopify vs WordPress: where WooCommerce fits
For an online store, compare Shopify with WordPress plus WooCommerce. The important differences are the product workflow, the work you maintain, and the full cost of ownership.
Start with the setup you can operate.
A hosted store
Shortlist Shopify when a hosted commerce platform fits your catalog and team. Still budget for apps, theme changes and support.
An existing WordPress site
Evaluate WooCommerce before replacing a useful site. Include hosting, backups, extensions and a named maintenance owner.
Complex custom products
Test the same configuration and order handoff on both shortlists. A preview or upload field alone is not the complete workflow.
WordPress is not the commerce layer.
WordPress is the website and content system; WooCommerce adds the store. A WordPress brochure site and a WooCommerce store have different requirements. This guide focuses on selling products, especially personalized apparel and other configurable items.
Shopify provides a hosted commerce foundation. WooCommerce runs within a WordPress hosting environment. Neither choice removes the need to manage content, payments, integrations and customer orders.
Compare the same product, not a feature count.
| Decision | Shopify | WordPress + WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Stock-bearing choices | Variants represent combinations such as size and color, with inventory managed per variant. | Variable products support variation-level prices, stock and images. |
| Personalization | Evaluate an app or custom integration for the required artwork, paid extras and preview behavior. | Evaluate a suitable extension or custom integration. The Product Add-Ons extension supports fields including file uploads and paid choices. |
| Conditional rules | Test dependent selections and invalid combinations in the chosen implementation. | Test the exact extension and rule set. One extension's limits are not limits of the entire platform. |
| Supplier data and pricing | Define the supplier connection, refresh behavior, price calculation and final order handoff. | Define the same connection and rules, including how they interact with the selected extensions. |
| Upkeep | Hosting is part of the platform; apps, theme code and connected services still need attention. | Plan hosting, backups and coordinated WordPress, WooCommerce, extension and theme updates. |
An artwork upload is different from a positioned preview. A preview is different from a production-ready file, and a displayed estimate is different from the amount that reaches checkout. Write down which outcomes your store actually needs.
The Direct Laser Source / Shopify
Price the connected workflow.
For Direct Laser Source, DVS connected supplier data, garment quantities, store-specific pricing and an artwork editor. The recording shows artwork placement and decoration previews within that specific Shopify project.
Use those steps as acceptance criteria for either platform. This is our Shopify work, not a tested WooCommerce implementation or a claim that the same result is unavailable there.
Explore the apparel builderChoose who owns the next update.
For WooCommerce, agree who maintains the host, backups, WordPress, theme, extensions and payment integrations. WooCommerce recommends a current backup and testing updates on staging before production. Managed hosting can take on some tasks; confirm the actual scope.
Shopify manages its platform, but a custom theme change, an app or a supplier connection can still break. Agree who diagnoses problems, tests changes and keeps access to the required accounts. Hosted does not mean no maintenance.
For design scope within Shopify, compare theme customization with a custom theme. Replacing a theme and replacing the commerce platform are separate decisions.
Compare a full year of the same requirements.
Do not compare a basic hosting offer with a fully configured commerce plan. Get current quotes in the same currency and billing term, including renewal prices and the features you need.
- Initial work
- Design, content, catalog setup, data transfer, integrations and acceptance tests.
- Recurring tools
- Platform or hosting, domain renewal, apps or extensions, backups and connected services.
- Payments and support
- Applicable payment and platform fees, maintenance, troubleshooting and future changes.
First-year cost is the initial work plus recurring services, applicable transaction costs and agreed support. A free core plugin does not make a finished WooCommerce store free; a Shopify plan does not include every custom workflow. Our standard website packages are not quotes for bespoke commerce systems.
Agree the handoff before choosing the platform.
Name the owner of the domain, store or hosting account, payment provider, extension licenses and connected supplier accounts. Define source-code access, documentation, uploaded-file storage, backup responsibilities and what happens when support ends.
Owning code does not guarantee that moving platforms will be simple. Inventory products, customers, order history, URLs, artwork files and automation rules separately. Check export and migration support before promising a transfer.
Use our redesign SEO checklist for useful URLs, redirects and launch checks. Neither platform automatically preserves rankings.
Run one realistic sample order.
- Choose an in-stock product, then change size, color and quantity.
- Upload artwork and check its saved placement and decoration choice.
- Try an incompatible choice and an unavailable item.
- Compare the displayed estimate with the final order amount.
- Inspect the files and instructions the business receives.
- Repeat the journey on a phone and identify who maintains each integration.
Need appointments rather than a product-led store? Our Shopify vs Wix guide covers that different decision. For the implementation inside a chosen platform, compare an options app with custom development.

Platform questions
Is WordPress the same as WooCommerce?
No. WordPress manages the website and content. WooCommerce is a commerce plugin for WordPress. Compare the complete store setup, including hosting, extensions and support, with the Shopify setup you would actually use.
Can both platforms sell personalized products?
Yes. Start with variants or variations for stock-bearing choices. Artwork, paid extras and dependent choices may need an app, extension or custom work. Confirm the selected price, uploaded file and production instructions reach the order correctly.
Which platform is cheaper or better for SEO?
Neither wins automatically. Compare a year of like-for-like costs and the work someone must maintain. Search visibility also depends on accessible pages, useful content, navigation and implementation; a platform name is not a ranking guarantee.
Start with one real product.
Share your store URL and the choices, pricing and order information that need to work together.
